… The funeral had been a success. Nelson had managed to keep his uncles sober and the two widows apart. The two families kept their own circles, abutting only as Nelson’s small family, the one that had been left, tightened quietly, angrily into itself—while Declan’s family, the one that had been chosen second, grew looser and larger and louder with entitlement, nudging its warm circle wider.
